Tracy Reese

Tracey Reese was born in 1965 in the United States. Her adventures with fashion started with a summer programme at New York Parsons College of Design when she was a high school student. She returned to Parsons for her degree, graduating in 1985.

She started by working for Arlequin when Martine Sitbon was designer, and then joined Perry Ellis at the suggestion of a Parsons classmate Marc Jacobs. When she was 23 years old, she tried to produce her own line, but was not successful. So she designed bridge-wear for five years.

In 1993, the opportunity for setting up her own label presented itself again, and she had the creative confidence to run with it.

She has now made a name for herself for nearly a decade, for flirty perfect slip-dresses and well-crafted dresses and blouses which are sold at Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue and Scoop in New York, as well as stores in Europe and the Far East.

Tracy presented her Spring/Summer 2003 collection during the New York Fashion Week in September 2002, and it was widely admired. A dress from the collection is shown on the left.

This was followed by her Fall/Winter 2003 collection, which she presented in New York during Fashion Week in February 2003.

Tracy built her collection on nature and gardens, with earthy colours and floral prints mixed with metallic and irridescent fabrics. Her clothes lead to a serene confident woman, sure of her own beauty.

Fall/Winter 2005

The Fall/Winter collection was shown during New York Fashion Week in February 2005. Tracy showed 41 outfits in a collection entitled "Pattern Play, an Artist at heart and Sweet Inspiration." Using layers of colour, texture and pattern in metallic shot fabrics of chiffon and velvet, the gowns offer softer and looser shapes. She included chantilly lace against brocade as well as rich vintage velvet and chenille. Her cropped jackets had a touch of Victorian detailing. A cherry embossed velvet jacket was worn over an ivory blouson camisole with a cummerbund pant. Overall the show was playful, breezy and audacious.

In the background, you can see one of Tracy's embroidered day dresses. All her clothes were eminently wearable and elegant.

One of Tracy's inspirations for the evening wear part of this collection, was the city of New Orleans, so much in the news because of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. Tracy merged two golden eras of the city - the Edwardian Belle Epoque and the "Pretty Baby" Southern belle of 1917.
