Brooke Christa Shields, shown here on the left, was born on May 31st, 1965 in New York. Her mother Teri was a former Revlon executive and model and started Brooke in the industry before she was a year old, posing in commercials for Ivory Snow. By age 3 she was a runway model.
During her childhood, she had an extensive portfolio and the natural beauty necessary for a model. Her mother's aggressive encouragement helped launch Brooke's career.
In 1978 at the age of 13, Brooke was cast as a child prostitute in Louis Malle's film Pretty Baby. Her questionable nude scene caused an uproar. In 1980 she starred in another memorable film The Blue Lagoon.
In 1980 Calvin Klein chose the 15 year old beauty to advertise his designer jeans, and she said "nothing comes between me and my Calvins" which went down in advertising history. Here is the ad we are talking about, shown on the right.
Brooke starred in many films in the 1980's and her modeling assignments were also legion. Time magazine chose her as the look of the 80s. The cover is shown here on the left. She also appeared on the cover of LIFE magazine three times.
However Brooke decided she did not want to only pursue a film and modeling career, she also wanted an education. So she went to Princeton University and took her B.A. in French literature during the 1980s. She graduated an Honours student.
Brooke's personal life has seen a lot of turbulence. She has dated many prominent men. One relationship with tennis star Andre Agassi went on for many years quite happily, and so they married. However it seems married life was a mistake, and they divorced after 2 years. Brooke is now happily married to TV writer Chris Henchy. She was famously shown in Vogue very pregnant with her first child.
Shields published two books "The Brooke Book" and "On your Own". She is a strong advocate for children's rights and literacy and campaigns vigorously.
She has made in all, some 35 films from 1977 to 2000 and continues to star in movies, though her family life takes first preference nowadays.
